IMAODBC 2012: And the winner is …

The Bo Sundgren Award of the International Marketing and Output Database Conference IMAODBC 2012 in Pruhonice near Prag goes to Alain Nadeau from the  Swiss Federal Statistical Office FSO.

In his contribution Alain showed how the renovation of the FSO website can go together with a more open data-oriented publishing. This by separating the three layers of the application.

One of the databases in the data layer is planned to be in the linked open data format, the 5star format described by Tim Berners-Lee. A prototype is under way and first experiences will show up beginning 2013.


Semantic Web, RDF and APIs

This is one, ambitious RDF-based way providing open data. It’s not the only one because data can also be offered i.e. via specific APIs. Such an API has been developped at FSO. It uses data from PX-Cubes and displays HTML-tables  (for the moment only internal access to the API).

Statistical Storytelling Revisited

Since its emergence in the 19th century, the continuous publication of results has been an important activity of official statistics. This publication activity, as well as its conditions, objectives and forms have been debated time and again in official statistics’ community.

About 10 years ago, one theme in particular came to the forefront of discussions: storytelling and its role in the dissemination and communication of statistics. Storytelling is a programme to make the results of official statistics accessible and understandable to people and – in fulfilment of an information mandate – to make “evidence based decision making” possible.

Looking back, it becomes apparent that storytelling meant, and still means, many different things to statisticians. The goal is largely undisputed, but the implementation varies widely and is influenced by developments in the media sector.

Where are we today? What and where is the potential of the storytelling approach in the world of the social and semantic web?

The goal of the following paper is to make an inventory of what storytelling comprises,what role storytelling plays within the framework of official statistics and which challenges official statistics face in view of the rapidly changing media environment.
This paper is the contribution of the author to the International Marketing and Output Database Conference IMAODBC 2010 in Vilnius.

The Bo Sundgren Award of the International Marketing and Output Database Conference IMAODBC 2010 in Vilnius goes to Vincenzo Patruno from Statistics Italy ISTAT. In his presentation about Data Sharing Vincenzo Patruno demonstrates the use of widgets for the dissemination of statistical informations. Widgets are small pieces of code which can be embedded in a website and interact with an application, i.e. a database. Once embedded the information they provide is always updated automatically whenever the application itself is updated.
See some examples on Vincenzos Blogespecially the post How to Share a whole application on the Web. The small table with figures for Rome on the right hand-column of his blog is such a widget.
